What is an "UltraViolet right"?

When you purchase UltraViolet movies or TV shows, you get more than just a disc or single-use stream. You get rights that represent other ways you can enjoy your UltraViolet movie or TV show. A few examples of what UltraViolet rights allow you to do:
- Download a digital version of a movie or TV show you purchased on Blu-ray
- Stream a show to your smartphone, tablet, or other compatible connected device
- Create or obtain a physical copy such as a DVD.
Please note that offers from UltraViolet retailers and streaming services may vary, and may not be the same in every country, so check with each to determine the details of their particular UltraViolet offer.

Will my UltraViolet rights expire?

Your rights to your UltraViolet Library of movies and TV shows do not expire. Content providers may limit the time you have to redeem an UltraViolet code that comes with a Blu-ray Disc or DVD, but after you have redeemed your rights to the movie or TV show, your rights do not expire. Your ability to stream or download from specific services is determined by the terms of use for that service.

What is my "UltraViolet Library"?

Your UltraViolet Library is a record of all of the official UltraViolet rights you have acquired. For example, if you redeem an UltraViolet right that comes with a Blu-ray Disc or DVD you've purchased, or buy an UltraViolet movie or TV show online, those rights are stored in your UltraViolet Library. Your Library appears as a list of the movies and TV shows you own the rights to, along with information about the specific rights involved such as HD or SD viewing or getting a physical copy. This record can be accessed by you and the UltraViolet retailers and UltraViolet streaming providers you choose to use.

Can I merge two separate UltraViolet Libraries?

Yes. To merge two Libraries, log into one Library at myuv.com, go to Library Settings and select "Merge Two Libraries". Follow the steps to complete the merge. Only full users may merge accounts. You'll be asked to log in to the second Library, so be sure a full user for that Library is available to provide the login name and password.

What parental control options are available to me?

Each UltraViolet partner provides parental control options specific to its service. Each service may give you a single setting for purchasing, streaming, and playback, or may give you separate settings for different environments such as apps, set-top boxes, and websites. You may have options to block anything labeled as “adult” or “explicit lyrics”, and you may have the option to block access to anything without a rating (see What does "unrated" mean?).

Changing parental control settings in one service will not change the parental control settings in other services that you use. Movies and TVs shows in your Library may be rated using different ratings systems, especially if they came from a different country. Ratings systems are associated with countries. You can choose which ratings systems are shown in your Library at myuv.com by selecting the Displayed Ratings System in your settings page.

How do I add new purchases to my UltraViolet Library?

For online purchases, you can easily add new movies and TV shows directly to your UltraViolet Library as part of your purchase process. Before you complete your check-out, you'll be given the opportunity to log into your UltraViolet Library (or create one if needed), and your movie or TV show will be automatically added to your UltraViolet Library.

UltraViolet-enabled movies and TV shows on disc come with in-package instructions on how to log in (or create a Library) and add the title to your UltraViolet Library. Most UltraViolet codes that come with discs can be redeemed on the Redeem Code page. (There is a link to the Redeem Code page in the footer.)

Where can I purchase new movies and TV shows?

You can purchase new movies and TV shows from any UltraViolet retailer. Just look for the UltraViolet logo. You may find it convenient to link your Library with UltraViolet retailers. See What is a "linked service" and what does creating a link enable?

How much do UltraViolet movies and TV shows cost?

Prices are set by the studios and retailers and will vary by title, just like they do for other formats such as DVD. UltraViolet does not set pricing.

What is a "linked service" and what does creating a link enable?

A "linked service" is an UltraViolet service, such as an online retailer or streaming provider, that you link with your UltraViolet Library. While you may need to link your UltraViolet Library to an UltraViolet service when purchasing or redeeming a movie or TV show for the first time, you are not required to keep the service linked to your UltraViolet Library. Linking is simply a way to streamline the process of purchasing or viewing movies and TV shows by skipping the step of logging in to UltraViolet every time you want to use the service.

Linking your UltraViolet Library to an account you have with an UltraViolet retailer enables your purchases to be added to your UltraViolet Library without requiring you to log in to UltraViolet first. Linking your UltraViolet Library to an UltraViolet streaming provider allows you to stream movies and TV shows without logging in to UltraViolet each time. The service provider may offer you the option to use its website to perform administrative functions for your UltraViolet Library, such as managing users. The service provider may offer you the option to receive personalized recommendations based on the movies and TV shows in your UltraViolet Library. Please note that you do not have to link to services that require a login each time you use the service. You can simply log in to UltraViolet each time. However, you must link your UltraViolet Library to use streaming services that do not support login.

How do I see my complete UltraViolet Library, including items purchased from all retailers?

Go to the Dashboard section and select "View Library". This will display all the rights in your Library.

How can I confirm that the movie or TV show I purchased has rights stored in my UltraViolet Library?

Go to the Dashboard section and select "View Library". You should be able to see the item displayed. If you still cannot see a movie or TV show that you believe you purchased, contact customer service at the UltraViolet retailer where you bought it.

I can't see certain movies and TV shows that should be in my Library. Where are they?

You may have parental controls enabled on your user profile that are blocking access to some movies and TV shows. Check your settings.

What are the different ways I can see my UltraViolet Library?

You can view your Library on the Library page as well as at participating UltraViolet services.

How can I ensure I do not repurchase UltraViolet movies or TV shows I already bought?

You can check to see what you have in your UltraViolet Library prior to making a purchase by viewing your Library on myuv.com. You may also receive a message from an UltraViolet retailer warning you that something is already in your UltraViolet Library.

I see movies and TV shows available on my retailer's website for purchase that are not listed as UltraViolet. Why?

Not all movies and TV shows provided by a retailer are available with UltraViolet rights. To make sure you're buying something that does have UltraViolet rights, look for the UltraViolet logo.

If my retailer or streaming provider stops participating in UltraViolet, what will happen to my rights?

Your rights with respect to the movies and TV shows in your UltraViolet Library will NOT be affected. UltraViolet retailers and UltraViolet streaming providers may provide options for future downloads and streaming.

If a user is deleted, what happens to the movies or TV shows purchased by that user?

Rights stay with the UltraViolet Library. Movies and TV shows purchased by the deleted user will be available to the remaining users as long as parental controls do not restrict them.

The users of my UltraViolet Library are no longer together. How do I divide the movies and TV shows that are in the Library?

Rights cannot be moved to other UltraViolet Libraries. When a movie or TV show is added to a Library, it remains with that Library. If you have family users that relocate temporarily (for instance, a child going away to school) they can continue to view movies and TV shows using an UltraViolet streaming provider.

Can I add previously purchased movies and TV shows to my Library?

Only movies and TV shows with UltraViolet rights can be added to your UltraViolet Library. This includes all titles you see for sale with the UltraViolet logo. Additionally, some retailers and studios may offer "disc to digital" programs in which movies and TV shows you already own can be upgraded with a grant of UltraViolet rights. Check with UltraViolet retailers for details. This feature may not be available in your country.

What does "unrated" mean?

An unrated movie or TV show has not been given a rating, such as G, PG-13, TV-G, TV-Y7, U, or FSK 6 by a particular ratings services such as the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) or the Netherlands Institute for the Classification of Audio-visual Media (NICAM). Most adult programming is unrated, though it is typically labeled specifically as "adult" to support appropriate parental controls. Direct-to-video programming, including children's programs, is usually unrated.

Do I need to purchase special equipment to use UltraViolet?

No. You can use UltraViolet on free websites and with free apps. Players and apps you already own may be upgradeable to support UltraViolet. In addition, devices that work with UltraViolet right out of the box will be available, and you may be interested in making such a feature one of your "checklist" items when buying new devices. Where to Watch

Can I make back-up copies of UltraViolet movies and TV shows?

Check with the UltraViolet service that has supplied your files and player to determine if back-up copies are possible. Because you can stream from UltraViolet streaming services, it's like having an online, cloud-based back-up that automatically comes with each movie or TV show in your Library.

Can I get a disc or other physical copy when I buy UltraViolet movies and TV shows online?

Some UltraViolet retailers may offer a version of an UltraViolet movie or TV show that includes permission to make or obtain a physical copy in addition to your download and streaming rights. If you originally purchased a physical copy (such as a Blu-ray Disc) it is considered to be your physical copy. If you purchase an UltraViolet movie or TV show that includes the right to a physical copy, and you have not already obtained a physical copy, you will be able to create a physical copy or obtain one from your UltraViolet retailer (how this works can vary by retailer). Contact the retailer that sold you the movie or TV show for details.

Will my movies and TV shows play in countries other than where I purchased them?

If you download a movie or TV show in your local region to a download player, you should be able to play it on that player anywhere in the world. However, geographic restrictions may prevent you from obtaining additional downloads or streaming in a different country from where you originally bought the movie or TV show.

What are the benefits to staying logged into UltraViolet?

Some UltraViolet services will detect if you are logged in to UltraViolet already, either from previously logging in at myuv.com or another UltraViolet service. Choose "Keep me logged in to UltraViolet" when you log in to take advantage of this convenience and you won't need to log in to each participating website or app.

Settings

Are there guidelines for creating my username?

Your username is the unique name that the UltraViolet system uses to identify you. We check your username at the time that you create it; if someone has already created a user profile with that username you will be instructed to choose a different username.

You can change your username at any time by going to User Settings, selecting your name or icon, and entering a new username. Your username must have at least 6 letters or numbers and no spaces. It may include periods (.), at signs (@), or hyphens (-).

I received a message saying my username already exists. What do I do?

Usernames must be unique in the entire UltraViolet system. Add a number or character to the username or select a different username and try again. You may want to use your email address as your username.

While trying to create a Library, I received a message saying a user account already exists using my email address. What do I do?

If your email address has been found in the UltraViolet system as a username, but you are not aware of having an active user account, you may have deleted the old user account directly or by merging Libraries. Your information will be saved for 90 days or longer, so the system is finding the deleted user account.

If you deleted your entire Library and would like to recover it, follow the instruction at How can I recover a closed Library?

If you deleted a user account but not the Library, just add the user again. If you want to add a new user account using the same email address, you will need to use a new, unique username.

Some UltraViolet services will allow you to create new Libraries but not allow you to choose usernames. In this case, create your new Library by selecting "Sign Up" at myuv.com. You can then return to the UltraViolet service and log into your new UltraViolet Library there.

How do I correct user information?

You can change some of your profile information and profile information of other users that you share your Library with. To change user profile information, go to User Settings and select the user's name or icon.

What is the difference between a standard user and a full user?

Standard users can purchase new movies and TV shows from UltraViolet retailers, stream/download/watch movies and TV shows, link/unlink services, view Library information, edit certain aspects of their user profiles, and add/remove standard users.

Full users can do everything a standard user can do, plus set/edit all user profile information for all users, add/remove full and standard users, change all user permissions, and rename, merge, or close the UltraViolet Library.

What happened to basic, standard, and full user permissions?

In the past, UltraViolet used different permission levels for users. We have simplified from 3 levels to just 2. All users are now either standard users or full users.

There are no longer basic users. (In the past, basic users were similar to standard users but were not able to stream or add/remove users.)

I previously created users with basic permissions. Did the permissions for those users change?

No. If you created a user in the past and specified the permission level as basic, that setting will not change. However, new users created for your Library today cannot be basic. See What happened to basic, standard, and full user permissions?

Why was my child's account deleted?

To protect your privacy UltraViolet no longer requires date of birth. All user accounts for children under the age of 13 were removed in August 2014. You may still share your UltraViolet Library with your child by using your own user account or by creating profiles at select UltraViolet streaming and download services. Visit Where to Share for a list of services to find which are right for you. Please note: Only individual user accounts for those under 13 have been removed. No movies or TV shows were removed. All other user accounts created for your Library will continue to have access to all of the movies and TV shows in your Library.

How do I alter the permissions of a user?

You must be a full user to change the permission level of another user. Go to User Settings, select the user's name or icon, and select "Full" or "Standard" in the permissions section. Don't forget to save your changes.

What should I do if I forget my username or password?

Select "Forgot username or password?" on the login screen. Complete the form and select "Continue". We will send you an email with a link. Select the link in the email to log in and create a new password. Passwords must be at least 6 characters in length, with no spaces. Capitalization matters. Be sure to keep your password in a secure place for future reference.

When I log in to other sites with UltraViolet, what information is being shared?

When you go to an UltraViolet service and log in with your UltraViolet username and password, you allow the service to access and display your UltraViolet Library, including the names of movies and TV shows purchased by each user of your account. You may also separately authorize a service to use your personal information to provide marketing services such as news and special offers.

What does it mean when a service asks for permission to use my personal information to create an account?

When you first visit an UltraViolet service, you may wish to create an account at that service to purchase, redeem, or watch UltraViolet movies and TV shows, or take advantage of other UltraViolet features. If you give permission, the service can simplify the process of creating a new account by copying information such as your e-mail address from your UltraViolet user account.

What items can I edit in my user profile?

You can edit most information in your user profile, including your name, email address, username, and password.

How do I edit my profile?

Go to User Settings and select your name or icon. Change the desired information and select "Save Changes" when you are done.

How do I change my password?

Go to User Settings and select your name or icon. Change the desired information and select "Save Changes" when you are done.

Can I delete users from my UltraViolet Library?

If you are a full user, you can delete any other user of your Library. If you are a standard user, you can delete any other standard users of your Library. Deletion removes the user's profile but does not affect any movies or TV shows in your Library. To delete a user, go to User Settings, select the user you wish to delete, and select "Remove User". You and the user that was deleted will receive an email notification.

How can I restore a deleted user?

You cannot restore a deleted user, but you can create a new user profile for the person using a participating UltraViolet service. See Where to Share for details.

How was my Library named and how can I rename it?

Your Library name is often automatically assigned during sign up. A Library name can have any combination of up to 50 letters, numbers, and characters (including spaces). To rename your Library, go to Library Settings (in the Dashboard section). Enter the new name and select "Save Changes".

How do I close my UltraViolet Library?

Go to Library Settings (in the Dashboard section), and then select "Close Library". A confirmation message will display. Select "Close Library" to complete the removal, or "Keep Library" to return to the Library Settings page. PLEASE NOTE THAT CLOSING YOUR LIBRARY WILL END YOUR ACCESS TO THE MOVIES AND TV SHOWS ASSOCIATED WITH THAT LIBRARY. You will have 90 days from the day of deletion to reinstate your Library. See How can I recover a closed Library?

How can I recover a closed Library?

It is possible to reopen a closed Library (but not a deleted user) as long as you act quickly. Simply log in at myuv.com with your username and password. You will be asked if you want to reactivate your Library, and you may need to accept the Terms of Use again. Your Library will be reactivated promptly. Note: You have up to 90 days to reactivate a deleted Library, so don't delay!

My user account has been suspended. What happened?

Your user account might have been suspended due to violation of the UltraViolet Terms of Use. If you believe an error has been made, please contact us.

My UltraViolet retailer or UltraViolet streaming provider's website will not allow me to link to my UltraViolet Library.

UltraViolet services are not obligated to provide linking capability. Please contact your service provider's customer support for assistance.

How do I manage or delete links between UltraViolet services (retailers, streaming providers, and others) and my UltraViolet Library?

Go to User Settings (in the Dashboard section), select a user profile, then open the Linked Services section. To remove a link, select "Unlink" next to the service name. To remove a permission, uncheck the checkbox next to it. Be sure to select the "Save Changes" button at the bottom of the page when you are finished. You will not be able to add a link or permission back on myuv.com. If you change your mind about a link or permission you removed, visit the service's website or app to add it back. Even after unlinking a service, you will still be able to use it by logging in to your UltraViolet Library each time, or by re-establishing the link.

How do I view which services my UltraViolet Library is linked to?

Go to User Settings (in the Dashboard section), select a user, then open the "Linked Services" section. Each user of your Library may be linked to different services.

How do I link UltraViolet services and my UltraViolet Library?

UltraViolet participating services may have an option to link your account with them to your UltraViolet Library. You must go to the service's web page or application to establish the link. You can remove links or any of the permissions that you have given a service by going to User Settings (in the Dashboard section), selecting your name/icon, then opening the Linked Services section of the page.

This record can be accessed by you and the UltraViolet retailers and UltraViolet streaming providers you choose to use.

Can I share my UltraViolet Library with other people?

Some UltraViolet services allow you to share your Library. See Where to Share for an overview of sharing options.

While trying to create a Library, I received a message saying a user account already exists using my email address. What do I do?

If your email address has been found in the UltraViolet system as a username, but you are not aware of having an active user account, you may have deleted the old user account directly or by merging Libraries.

What is the difference between a standard user and a full user?

Can I share my UltraViolet Library with a child?

There are two main ways you can share your UltraViolet Library with a child: 1. The simplest way is to use your own accounts at UltraViolet streaming and download services that are linked to your UltraViolet Library. You can set up apps and devices by logging in to the services, then supervise your child’s use. 2. Some UltraViolet services allow you to create user profiles or sub-accounts for use with their site and apps. You can create a separate profile for a child and apply parental controls to limit what the child sees. Visit Where to Share for more information.

How do I alter the permissions of a user?

You must be a full user to change the permission level of another user. Go to User Settings, select the user's name or icon, and select "Full" or "Standard" in the permissions section. Don't forget to save your changes.

Why might I need an account with an UltraViolet participating service to watch and download movies and TV shows?

Your UltraViolet Library is a record of all of the UltraViolet movie and TV show rights you own. Download and streaming access is provided by UltraViolet participating services. Most participating services require that you create a separate account in their system to buy or access movies and TV shows from them. In some cases, a single account at a participating service can be shared by all users of an UltraViolet Library. In other cases, each user of the UltraViolet Library will need a separate account at the participating service to watch or download UltraViolet movies and TV shows there. You can usually link your UltraViolet user account to your accounts at participating services. See What is a "linked service" and what does creating a link enable?

How many different UltraViolet movies and TV shows can users of a single UltraViolet Library watch at the same time?

Unlimited if they are watching downloaded (local) files, and up to three online streams at the same time.

UltraViolet Basics

What is UltraViolet?

UltraViolet is a free, cloud-based digital rights library that gives you greater flexibility with how and where you watch the movies and TV shows that you purchase. When you buy a movie or TV show from a participating retailer, it's automatically added to your UltraViolet Library and you have options to stream it over the Internet and/or download it for offline viewing to a variety of devices. Because UltraViolet offers so many viewing choices, you have greater freedom to choose where you want to watch -- on a mobile device, computer, television, game console, etc.

How does UltraViolet work?

Every time you buy an UltraViolet movie or TV show, you can add a digital "proof of purchase" to your UltraViolet Library. UltraViolet retailers and streaming services can then confirm your rights to the movie or TV show and enable you to watch.

What kind of personal information is collected when I create my UltraViolet Library?

Just the basics: Name, email address, and country. You don't need to provide a credit card to sign up for UltraViolet, although UltraViolet retailers may require a credit card to purchase UltraViolet movies and TV shows.

Does it cost anything to set up and manage my UltraViolet Library?

No, UltraViolet Libraries are free of charge, with unlimited access to manage your movies and TV shows.

Can I share my UltraViolet Library with other people?

Some UltraViolet services allow you to share your Library. See Where to Share for an overview of sharing options.

How do I edit my profile?

Go to User Settings and select your name or icon. Change the desired information and select "Save Changes" when you are done.

How do I change my password?

Go to User Settings and select your name or icon. Change the desired information and select "Save Changes" when you are done.

How do I create a Library?

UltraViolet Libraries can be created at some UltraViolet retail services or on myuv.com. (Select "Sign Up" to get started.) You must be 13 or older to create an UltraViolet Library or user account. If you are under 18 you must have parent or legal guardian permission. See the UltraViolet Terms of Use and UltraViolet Privacy Policy for more information.

Creating an UltraViolet Library does not require a credit card or any other financial information. You only need to provide your name, email address, and country, create a unique username and password, and accept the UltraViolet Terms of Use and Privacy Policy.

What is a "linked service" and what does creating a link enable?

A "linked service" is an UltraViolet service, such as an online retailer or streaming provider, that you link with your UltraViolet Library.

How can I watch my UltraViolet movies and TV shows?

All kinds of ways. You can download and/or stream to many Internet-connected devices:
- Smartphones
- Tablets
- Cable/satellite set-top boxes
- Blu-ray Disc players
- Internet connected TVs
You may also be able to get a physical copy such as a DVD if this right is part of the offer from the retailer. See Where to Watch.

Why might I need an account with an UltraViolet participating service to watch and download movies and TV shows?

Your UltraViolet Library is a record of all of the UltraViolet movie and TV show rights you own. Download and streaming access is provided by UltraViolet participating services. You can usually link your UltraViolet user account to your accounts at participating services. See What is a "linked service" and what does creating a link enable?

What's the difference between downloading and streaming?

Downloaded files can play even if you are not connected to the Internet, using a compatible player. Streaming UltraViolet movies and TV shows requires a high-speed Internet connection. UltraViolet streaming providers make your movies and TV shows available on demand on a variety of devices and services. To explore options for how to watch, see Where to Watch.

What is an "UltraViolet streaming provider"?

An UltraViolet streaming provider gives you online access to some or all of the movies and TV shows in your UltraViolet Library without requiring you to download a player.

How many different UltraViolet movies and TV shows can users of a single UltraViolet Library watch at the same time?

Unlimited if they are watching downloaded (local) files, and up to three online streams at the same time.

Can I pause streaming of a movie and come back to it later?

Yes, if the streaming service offers a pause feature. A streaming session is valid for 24 hours. After that, you may need to log in again to continue streaming.

How do I find download players?

Many UltraViolet service apps support downloading for offline viewing. Check with the services listed on Where to Watch for details.
